A product must first and foremost be relatively easy
to get working. This includes clear, consistent documentation. If
configuration software exists, it needs to be friendly enough for a novice
to get running without having to call tech support. Home networking
products are used by more than just enthusiasts so they must be
installable by anyone.
The product must perform as well or better than
advertised. The feature set must be consistent with the advertised feature
set at the time of the review. False or misleading claims are not
tolerated.
It must also have a set of features consistent with
other products in its class and price range. This is where the most leeway
is given. Obviously features vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some
are better at one thing while others are better at different things. There
is no hard and fast rule, but more than a few deficiencies will definitely
drop the product down to a 2.
Products can score a 2/3 for a number of reasons.
2/3 scores do not indicate a bad product, it simply indicates the product
may need some tweaking. If a product displays one or more of these
characteristics it may be given a 2/3 score.
Priced wrong for its feature set when measured
against its peers.
or
Hard to follow documentation or setup instructions
or
Inconsistent, buggy or unintuitive configuration
software or drivers
or
Multiple feature deficiencies when compared to its
peer products
Few products ever see a 1/3 but it does happen.
Gross problems with the product must exist making it relatively unusable,
far to expensive or inadequate for the advertised purpose. HomeNetHelp.com
does not recommend products that score a 1/3.
