UGATE 3000
UGate is OUT OF BUSINESS. I have
archived the Ugate
/ MaxGate firmware in case their site goes
down. Firmware for all router versions and their manuals have been
archived
Like all broadband routers, the UGATE 3200, 3200P and 3000
allow multiple computers to access the internet over your cable modem or
DSL connection. Using a networking technology called NAT, or network
address translation only one internet IP address is needed for your entire
LAN. Additionally, the router acts as a firewall keeping unwanted guests
off of your LAN.
The UGATE 3000 comes with 4
10/100 switched rj-45 LAN ports for connecting computers. The 3200 and 3200P have 7 10/100 switched ethernet
ports. The 3200P has a single paralel port and print server
built in. Additionally, both devices come with an uplink port for
connecting more hubs and switches. Built in DHCP services support up to
253 computers on your LAN.
Both the 3000 and 3200(P) connect to your cable modem
or DSL modem with an RJ45 ethernet jack. If you have an internal PCI
cable/DSL modem or if your modem connects to your computer with USB or
ATM, you can not use these devices.
Administration
My favorite feature of the UGATE 3x00 is the
administration implementation. UGATE put a secure web server in these
routers that handles all of the configuration and administration. This
allows you to administer the device from any PC on your LAN or even from
the internet!
Virtual Hosting
If you are doing any hosting (mail, ftp, games,
etc), the ‘virtual servers’ feature lets you map IP ports in various
computers on your lan to the internet. One of the computers on your LAN
could expose port 23 for an FTP site and another computer could expose
ports for a gaming server. When a request comes in from the internet, the
UGATE figures out what IP port the request is on and directs the traffic
to the PC servicing that port!
Dynamic Domain Name Service
UGATE has teamed up with TZO to provide a feature
called ‘dynamic domain name services’. This feature allows you to have a
domain name like mycomputer.ugate.net point at your UGATE router (and your
lan) on the internet. This is very convenient for hosting games or a web
server. For instance, yf you are hosting a web server you can tell people
to find it at yourname.ugate.net. This service is free for the first year
and $25 US for each additional year. The UGATE 3200(P) and 3000 are the only
broadband routers that feature this service built into the hardware.
Desk Space Saver
The UGATE 3200 and 3000 are great space savers. They
have a large, wide footprint that is made for stacking. My cable modem
stacked perfectly on top of it. This is quite a relief in a world where
many manufactures are designing unwieldy ‘vertical’ designs.
