Failsafe Downloads for HTTP and FTP
Like some of the software based download ‘helpers’ on the internet, Midpoint allows
the ability to ‘restart’ a download. If a connection failure occurs in the middle
of a download, it can be resumed when the connection is reestablished.
Performance Tuner
Durring the install process Midpoint will allow you to optimize your computer for
Internet communications. Midcore claims that this can give up to a 30% throughput
boost. Performance tuning is done with a simple wizard. I don’t know why this isn’t
built into more software packages.
Fastest DNS?
MidPoint has a very cool feature for looking up internet names. Buried in
the Options>Advanced>Miscellaneous properties there is an option called “DNS
Use All Servers. With this enabled, Midpoint will request an internet name from
all known DNS servers and use the one that came back the fastest! T
his feature provides another level of ‘snappiness’ to web browsing.
Web Content Cache
Another advantage to using MidPoint for connection sharing is its built in content
cache. While you are surfing the web, Midpoint builds up a library of commonly requested
items like web graphics. If you re-visit that site or someone else on your network
visits that site, items are pulled from the cache instead of the web. This both
improves performance AND frees up your Internet connection for other requests.
Midpoint’s Firewall
Most NAT based connection sharing software an NAT broadband routers will protect
you from traffic f rom the internet but do not monitor traffic going from your computers
TO the internet. MidPoint controls connections in both directions. By default, MidPoint
allows only a select number of IP ports access to the Internet. Some applications
classified as ‘spyware’ or ‘trojan horses’ will have a hard time working through
MidPoint. MidPoint scored a perfect zero in our incoming firewall tests. See the
firewall test results here .
NAT Port Forwarding and advanced application support MidPoint excels at supporting
internet applications that might otherwise be unfriendly in other shared connection
environments. Out of the box, it supports configurations for Internet games like
Quake, Tribes, Battlenet, Mplayer, Subspace, etc. It supports port ranges, idle
timeout settings, inbound connections for hosting your own servers and the list
goes on.
