Managed Security and Accountability
Using software for connection sharing often allows good control over how users interact with the Internet and MidPoint is no exception. Guests can be configure in a variety of ways including protocol lockout, access times, PICS and VCR bases content rating systems support, bandwidth restrictions, site blocking and more. Additionally, easy to read usage account reports are made available for review.
Pricing
MidCore sells MidPoint two ways. The first is to purchase a license outright. Pricing starts at $79.99 for a three user license. The second method is by subscription. MidPoint runs $9.99 per month and comes with unlimited phone tech support and unlimited version upgrades. MidPoint plus, the version that contains the VPN, email server and all other add-on’s runs only $17.99 per month. When compared to the other offerings on the market, Midpoint is a very reasonably priced solution with a feature set that beats the competition hands down.
Final Notes
This software is so full of features and options to tweak it would take me a whole web site to cover them all. Because of this, Midpoint offers an unparalleled level of flexibility but it comes at a price. I would still suggest a NAT based broadband router to most Cable/DSL users that want a simple ‘plug it in’ solution with zero administration. For us habitual tweakers, MidPoint offers a solution that can be customized to our exact needs. Download a copy and try it out for yourself .
Troubleshooting
**Missing HOSTS file
If your Guest computer can not seem to connect to anything, make sure a HOSTS file exists in the root of your Windows directory. The Guest application adds an entry to this file but can sometimes have trouble creating it if the file does not already exist. Go to your windows directory, create a new empty text document and name it HOSTS (no extension)
