www.homenethelp.com This router is quite possibly the easiest router to install and maintain I’ve ever found. Its compact size makes your home network take up a little space as possible. I would highly recommend it for people of any skill level wanting a home network.
Installation:
The installation of the product was simple. Insert the CAT5 going from the Hawking Router to a DSL modem, and another from the router to a hub or switch. Then, after installing the management software on one computer, you can use a wizard to finish the installation. (You will need proper connection information provided by your ISP)
Features
DHCP:
A great aspect of this router is that it can work with an ISP with DHCP. This means that your router can get a dynamic IP assigned from the ISP with no network breakdown. You can also use DHCP behind the router to assign up to 254 IP addresses within your network. Static IP addresses are also available to be mapped to specific computers (even when using DHCP for the rest of the network).
Internet Spy:
Want to know what your computer users are doing at the time? Well, with the Internet Spy provided with the Hawking Router, you can monitor any traffic you are currently passing through the router. Very sneaky!!!
Local Server (Virtual Hosting):
You can map specific ports on the router to specific computers on your network. This allows you to run web/game/ftp/mail servers from within the network easily. Very good with a dynamic DNS service such as something provided by www.dyndns.org
Web Interface:
As an in-home networking contractor, I found the accessibility of the router’s configuration through a web interface a very handy tool. If problems arise, and the Internet connection to the router is active, you can connect to the router to attempt to diagnose the problem. It saves travel time, and the hassle of having to make a house call late at night.
Update 4/13/2001
Some peope have reported problems getting the hawking router to work with DHCP based cable modems.
