stand alone router and switch

I curently have a router switch combo. i am looking to expnad my network to more than the supplied 4 ports. i am looking into getting a stand alone router and switch. posibly a cisco 2600 series. it appears that i can not just run my broadband connection to the router and the to the switch. it looks as if there is something else that must go between. Any ideas?

We have tried everything to hook up a home network with linksys wrt54g wireless router with a vonage linksys box also, with no success. Can someone please tell us in simple terms what we can do...we have two computers, neither are wireless we have purchased one wireless card for the second computer. what are we doing wrong...please help amatuers!!!!(smile)
