HotLine 2.0 is
comming!
By: Chris Kaminski
Date: Aug 23, 2001
Windows and Mac version available
HotLine 2.0 is on it’s way and
it looks fantastic. The new version is the first SERIOUS update to hotline
since its inception. It appears to be a completely different network than
the current Hotline.
User ID
database?
From the literature, it
sounds like 2.0 will have a central user ID database. In my opinion, this
is a VERY BAD THING. If the central user database goes down, or is shut
down like napster, then the whole application stops working. HotLine has
always been de-centralized and I hope it stays that way.
Timeline:
October 2001 marks a 60 day beta
period, so we can expect a release in December 2001. At that time, I will
update this entire article to reflect the new version.
Features
HotLine 2.0 will integrate the
server and client into the same application. This may increase the number
of servers available dramatically. At the same time, it may become even
harder to find quality servers as they get buried in the noise.
The interface has been updated
to look ‘cartooney’ like OSX and WindowsXP. In addition to the new look,
HotLine 2.0 will be skinnable. I am sure we will see 100’s of new skins
appear within hours of the beta release. Here are the official
screenshots.
WARNING: Like all file sharing communities,
HotLine is filled with ‘rascals’. Be sure your anti-virus software is up
to date before downloading anything from unknown Hotline web sites. If you
don’t have an anti-virus program you can download one free from
