Diagnosing ICS - Getting ICS Running

INFO: How to
un-install ICS
In your control panel, double-click the
"Add/Remove Programs" icon. Select the "Windows Setup" tab.
Double click "Internet Options", and unselect the Internet Connection
Sharing box. Click OK and OK again.
Problem: Slow transfer Rates with Cable Modem or DSL
modem

Problem: No
Tools\Mtsutil\ICS folder on the Windows ME CD
When troubleshooting your network in Windows ME, the
wizard may tell you to to turn DHCP on by going to the Tools\Mtsutil\ICS
folder, but it does not exist on the CD. See this microsoft link
for details.
Problem: NetMeeting
is not functioning
Netmeeting and ICS are not fully compatable with
each other. You will experience problems with the white board, the file
sharing, and possibly other features. You will definitely not be able
to receive calls with NetMeeting with ICS running.
Problem: “Number of
Computers Connected” is incorrect
ICS displays the number of computers using the ICS
service. It can take 10-15 minutes before a computer is recognized as
gone. According to Microsoft, this is ‘by design’ and is normal. No fix is
available, no fix will be made available.
Problem: I
Re-installed of windows, now ICS will not work
Known issue, uninstall ICS and re-install it.
Problem: My DSL or
Cable Modem requires me to use PPPoE and some ICS clients can not connect
to some web sites
There is an MTU size issue ICS clients that are
running Windows 2000 (possibly other OS' too). The MTU size must be
under 1492 to function. See this article
for details.
INFO: VPN's on an
ICS Host computer (don't to it!)
If you install a VPN service on a computer running
ICS, ICS will no longer route internet requests. Instead, all traffic will
be directed through the VPN. (OUCH!) DO NOT INSTALL VPN on a system with
ICS running.
INFO: AOL 6.0 and
ICS
AOL 6.0 and ICS Host do not mix. Do not install AOL
6.0 on a computer with Hosting ICS. AOL 6.0 installs VPN adapters witch
are incompatible with ICS.
Problem: ICS
will not dial my DSL connection. My DSL connection uses PPPoE
1) Uninstall ICS
2) Start Internet Explorer and select
<Options> from the <Tools> Menu
3) Set IE to "Always Dial My Default
Connection"
3) Under Dialing Settings, select your DSL provider
as your default connection.
4) Click OK and exit Internet Explorer
5) Install ICS
